A recent study at a leading UK Equine College has shown that Magno-Pulse Ltd’s Magnetic Tendon Boots significantly increase the blood circulation around the limb. This, in turn, leads to faster healing of damaged tendons, shins and splints and can even help with laminitis and navicular disease.
The scientific study was a crossover trial using 10 horses fitted with the boots to each front limb. One fore leg had the unique Magno-Pulse magnets whilst the other leg was fitted with an identical boot but without the magnets.
In the first set of tests both boots were removed after 12 hours and accurate temperatures taken at three points at regular intervals for the next hour. In the second tests the boots were in place for 24 hours before being removed. The report shows: -
1) After 12 hours the magnetic boot produced a slight (but not significant) increase in temperature.
2) After 24 hours the magnetic boot produced a significantly higher (average 2deg. C) increase in temperature compared with the non-magnetic boot.
3) During the 24 hour test the limb that had been wearing the magnetic boot still showed an average increase of almost 1 deg C even after both boots had been removed for 60 minutes.
4) During both series of tests the hooves of the limbs treated with the magnets felt warmer to touch when compared with the untreated limbs.
Magnetic Therapy is not new and is just one of several therapies that are becoming increasingly popular with horses and their owners. The aim of physical therapy is to stimulate tissue repair through utilising the properties of natural energy to enhance and support physiological responses.
The increase in temperature discovered in the report is due to improved blood flow, which, in turn, will assist and accelerate the natural healing mechanisms.
Derek Price, racehorse breeder and managing director of Magno-Pulse Ltd commented, “I am delighted to see these results. I am a practical person – not a scientist. My wife and I have been breeding racehorses for well over 20 years and we have been horrified at some of the methods used to treat horses such as firing and blistering.
“I formed the company over 10 years ago on the basis that these magnets worked on my own horses at my own stud. I didn’t know the how or why, but I could certainly see the end result. Now this report confirms that my initial ‘non-scientific’ ideas were sound. This is a massive piece in the overall jigsaw puzzle that we need to put together to obtain a complete picture on Magnetic Therapy.
“We have been supplying these boots to professional trainers for many years and this study gives proof that all their testimonials and tales of miracle cures are genuine. I know that many of these trainers are following our advice and use the magnetic boots as a preventative measure. They fit the boots immediately after exercise even if the horse appears sound. This accelerates the natural repair and recovery which reduces the opportunities for damage to the tendons and shins in the first place.”
There are numerous magnetic devices on the market that claim to improve circulation. Up till now there has been little scientific evidence to support these claims. This study shows that at least the Magno-Pulse tendon boots do have a significant part to play in enhancing the body’s own natural healing processes. The increase in temperature in the hoof should also be a great help to any animal suffering with laminitis or navicular disease.
The report does, however, give a word of caution. “During the research we found many conflicting theories as to how Magnetic Therapy works. We also discovered a lot of different products with a variety of magnet strengths and polar configurations. This study confirms the work done by Davis and Rawls (1979) and others in that the powerful South-seeking magnets used by Magno-Pulse produce an increase in local warming and vasodilation. This does not confirm (or deny) that other magnetic products will work. Hopefully, they will be carrying out their own tests so that we can all learn more about this simple and natural treatment.”
The report also stresses the importance of only using these magnetic boots during periods of rest and not whilst exercising. It is believed that ANY boot worn during exercise may contribute to the destruction of flexor tendons because they reach temperatures that are able to cause fibroblast death. The vasodilatory effects of the magnets would therefore further aggravate this problem.
Final comment from Derek “When I designed these boots over 10 years ago I had no idea how popular they would become. I am flattered to think that so many other companies have tried to copy my initial work. It now appears that the original design with the unique Magno-Pulse magnet configuration is the first product to be “proven” in a proper scientific study. I hope the other companies will quickly follow suit so that they can also back up their claims.”
